FDA Ghana Registration Guide for MSMEs

This comprehensive manual helps micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Ghana understand and navigate the FDA product registration and compliance process. Proper FDA registration (market authorization) is mandatory for most MSME products before commercial sale in Ghana.

  • Facility Licensing: Manufacturing and storage facilities must be licensed and compliant with FDA standards.
  • Product Registration: Each product requires separate registration and market authorization.
  • Regulated Products: Includes food & beverages, cosmetics & personal care, household chemicals, herbal medicines, supplements, medical devices, and tobacco products.

Progressive Licensing Scheme (PLS): Designed for micro, cottage, and small-scale producers in food (excluding water), cosmetics, and household chemicals, allowing gradual compliance under FDA supervision.

Application Steps:

  • Step 1: Determine if your product is regulated by FDA Ghana.
  • Step 2: Choose the correct registration pathway for your product type.
  • Step 3: Gather all required documents (business registration, product info, labels, facility evidence).
  • Step 4: Download and complete the appropriate form from the FDA Ghana website.

Required Documents: Business details, product samples, label/artwork, payment evidence. Incomplete applications cause delays.

Common Compliance Pitfalls:

  • Poor hygiene, storage, or quality control.
  • No batch coding for product traceability.
  • Unauthorized changes to ingredients, labels, or production site.
  • Missing manufacturing and expiry/best-before dates.

Application Submission:

  • Create or log into your FDA/G-FIRMS account.
  • Select the correct product category.
  • Complete forms, upload documents and labels, and submit samples.
  • Pay FDA fees and respond promptly to queries.

Review Process & Timelines: FDA reviews applications in stages: administrative, label/technical, lab analysis, and final decision. Regular food applications: 30 working days. Premium processing: 5-15 working days for eligible applications.

After Approval:

  • Keep your certificate safe.
  • Use only approved labels.
  • Notify FDA of any changes.
  • Renew registration before expiry.
